Prepare for your first position in our merchant organization through a combination of classroom learning, hands-on training, and outside experiences. In a buying role, you will gain knowledge and skills for selecting, buying and assorting merchandise to capture emerging trends. In a planning role, you will learn to analyze financial data, plan merchandise assortment selections, and develop plans by store location to achieve specific business goals. We encourage a crossover career path with experiences in both buying and planning roles as you advance in your career. This program is located in New York City with tentative start dates of January, March, June, July, September, & October.
What you have the opportunity to do:
- Learn to develop and implement a business plan for a multi-million dollar department, with direct profit-and-loss responsibilities
- Consistently analyze and react to business trends by strategically selecting appropriate merchandise
- Communicate with vendors about sales analysis, price negotiation and sell-through markdown issues
- Learn the elements of financial forecasting and allocation
- Identify stock issues and opportunities by region and by store
- Maintain appropriate stock levels by managing replenishment systems
- Analyze assortment effectiveness and make assortment adjustments by store location
- Track key item and style performance, actual vs. plan, by location
What to bring to the program:
- Bachelor’s degree with a solid academic record, all majors welcome
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects to achieve productivity and business goals
- Skills to promote teamwork, solve problems and manage complex relationships
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word

On-Site experiences will introduce you to your future business partners, and our My Macy’s initiative. Emphasis is placed on gaining insights to the customer, and how to collaborate cross-functionally to identify opportunities to drive sales. Off-Site experiences will take you to key sites which will be integral to your success. Off-Site experiences may include: Store locations, Macys.com, a Vendor Showroom, and a Distribution Center.
