Omni Buying & Planning

The 8-week paid Omni Buying & Planning Internship at Bloomingdale’s is designed to provide an overview of the Buying or Planning function and why specific merchandise is bought and distributed for a nationwide, full-line department store. Through this New York City-based internship, you’ll gain experience in financial analysis, professional development and communication skills that will provide the framework for a successful career in corporate retail. Our Omni Buying & Planning Internship provides you with a unique opportunity to apply classroom training in addressing opportunities and challenges faced in our corporate offices.

The Merchant Executive Development Internship is an 8-week Summer program offered in New York, NY.

Career Growth

As a merchant intern you will spend eight weeks in an experiential learning environment which allows you to collaborate and network with other interns, while also allowing you to gain immediate responsibility by working on individual departmental projects. Learning objectives are coordinated with projects and supervisory feedback to enhance your understanding of business responsibilities. Classroom instruction is combined with your hands-on experiences to augment learning and ensure the development of leadership skills and business acumen necessary to enter the business world.

While interning at Bloomingdale’s, you will be immersed in all that our corporate culture has to offer including community outreach initiatives and involvement with local volunteer programs. Our program also enables interns to participate in Meet and Greets and roundtable discussions with members of our Executive Committee.

As an intern at Bloomingdale’s you will gain key insight into potential career opportunities as a Buyer or Planner as well as exposure to the Buying & Planning Executive Development Program

What is a Merchant?

A merchant is a businessperson who specializes in the purchase and sale of commodities for profit. In today's omnichannel world, Merchant roles are complex and have a huge impact on the global economy. Bloomingdale's Merchant team is comprised of many important business functions including Omni Buyers, Omni Planners and Digital Merchants.

Omni Merchants

Bloomingdale’s Merchants drive the business by curating a distinguished product assortment, leveraging analytics to optimize sales, and ensuring we meet customer demand both in stores and online. Merchants strategize across channels, navigate the competitive landscape and understand the importance of innovation. Omni Merchants focus on building strong vendor relationships resulting in a unique and exclusive merchandise assortment. Bloomingdales’s Merchants maximize sales and gross margin for each product category by identifying, procuring, assorting and allocating the products that their customer demands.

Omni Buyer

Omni Planner

Digital Merchant

The Omni Buyer is responsible for the sales and profitability for their category of business through strategy creation and execution. The Omni Buyer selects and curates merchandise that creates a distinctive, powerful image and demand for Bloomingdale’s that speaks to our customer both in stores and online. The Omni Buyer is also responsible to lead, engage and develop junior merchants.

Omni Planner is responsible to drive the business by leveraging analytics to optimize sales, gross margin and turnover for both the stores and online business. Omni Planners are directly responsible for developing and maximizing localization strategies to capture business opportunities by demographics, climate, and other unique market characteristics. The Omni Planner is also responsible to lead, engage and develop junior merchants.

Digital Merchants influence the online assortment and are responsible for driving site merchandising and marketing strategies to maximize online demand. The Digital Merchants work closely with their Omni-Buyer counterpart to drive omnichannel revenue growth through the management of digital investment.

Omni Buyer
Merchant Executive Development Program

The Merchant Executive Development Program provides big-picture exposure to Bloomingdale's business model. Through a robust mix of in-class training with on the job application, the Merchant Executive Development Program will provide you with the technical and business skills required for merchant roles within our Omni Enterprise. The Merchant Executive Development Program will prepare you for your first merchant role as a buying coordinator/marketing liaison.

Buying Coordinator/Marketing

Ensure accurate representation and assortment of product in stores, online and in advertising through the management of purchase orders and samples. Each position requires forging strong vendor relationships and will directly interact and negotiate with our vendors to acquire samples. The roles require frequent communication with buying, marketing, creative, MIO and site merchandising teams and are both development positions for an assistant role in either buying or planning.

Omni Assistant Buyer

Responsible to support Buying team to drive sales, margin, turn and growth for total company. The Omni Assistant Buyer will need to collaborate with Planning, Visual and other Support functions to execute and drive business. Ensuring timely delivery of merchandise through consistent communication and follow up with the vendor, distribution center and merchant Omni team. This role provides significant exposure and development in preparation for the analyst or business manager role.

Analyst/Business Manager

A rotation as an analyst can take you outside of the merchandising pyramid and into the Bloomingdale’s organization at large. Designed to provide executives with a holistic understanding of the retail business analytical roles exist within (but are not limited to) marketing, customer insights, loss prevention, and finance. The Business Manager is responsible to execute big picture strategies for a specific division of the merchant pyramid. The Business Manager works closely with senior leadership to identify market trends, and guide insights and analytics to merchants on strategies to drive opportunities and minimize risks by vendors. Either role at this step in the career path is a developmental position towards Omni Senior Assistant Buyer.

Omni Senior Assistant Buyer

Responsible for buying merchandise in their assigned area to maximize sales and profitability of business in stores and online. Develops and implements strategies by vendor; working with the buyer to curate the assortment, as well as partners with planning to analyze and react to sales trend. The Omni Assistant buyer is tasked with creating a distinguished assortment with existing vendors as well as seek out new and differentiating vendors to satisfy customer demand in their assigned area of business. This is a developmental role that prepares you for the Omni Buyer role.

Analyze sales and stock performance, including tracking and analyzing sales and stock by location to maximize trends and recommend strategies. This role provides significant exposure and development in preparation for the analyst or business manager role.

Analyst/Business Manager

A rotation as an analyst can take you outside of the merchandising pyramid and into the Bloomingdale’s organization at large. Responsible for managing part of the Omni Planners’ total business throughout the season, evaluating and reacting to selling to ensure in-stock position. This position to ensure that the financial strategy supports national and localized assortments both in-stores and online with appropriate receipt and inventory level for assigned area of the business. The Omni Senior Assistant Planner is responsible for using analytics to make customer centric business driving decisions to achieve sales, margin and turn for the omni-enterprise.

Requirements
  • All majors welcome; 3.2 or higher GPA
  • Solid academic achievement and ability to demonstrate strong analytical skills
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal and time management skills
  • Extracurricular activities, leadership skills and workforce experience are a plus
  • Organized approach to prioritizing projects and ability to multi-task
  • Strong business acumen and value of professional business ethics
  • Ability to succeed in a dynamic, fast-paced, competitive team environment
  • Proficiency in MS Word and MS Excel
