The Omni Buying & Planning Executive Development Program at Bloomingdale’s prepares you for your first position as an Omni Junior Merchant, and enables you to develop, analyze, strategize and promote a buying department within the organization.

A Day in the Life

Managing the vast amount of merchandise through our Omni Enterprise, from stores to e-commerce, is incredibly intricate and complex. Check out how a day might go for you as a member of the Omni Buying & Planning team.

This program teaches you about selecting, buying and assorting merchandise to capture emerging trends. Working directly with buyers, planners, store executives, vendors and advertising, you’ll learn how to execute a specific business strategy and be responsible for a multi-million dollar business.

Formal training classes are combined with hands-on experience working in our merchant offices; in addition to classroom learning and office exposure, you’ll also shadow in stores to gain insight into our customers’ needs and the merchant/store relationship. Success in your first position as an Omni Junior Merchant leads to future positions in Buying.

The Merchant Executive Development Program is offered in New York, NY annually, based on the needs of our business.

Career Growth

As a member of the Merchant team, you'll be directly responsible for the merchandise assortment offered at every Bloomingdale’s Department Store across the country, as well the bloomingdales.com site. You will be responsible for identifying and capturing trends in order to drive Bloomingdale’s business forward. Your work will be consumer-focused and analytical but will also be relationship-driven and require interpersonal skills.

Roles within the Buying and Planning functions incorporate a wide range of business concepts including procurement, site merchandising, vendor partnerships, customer analytics, allocation, marketing and advertising. Each member of the Buying and Planning team contributes to driving the business. Even as a new executive, you will make recommendations that have a direct impact on sales and profitability.

What is a Merchant?

A merchant is a businessperson who specializes in the purchase and sale of commodities for profit. In today's omnichannel world, Merchant roles are complex and have a huge impact on the global economy. Bloomingdale's Merchant team is comprised of many important business functions including Omni Buyers, Omni Planners and Digital Merchants.

Omni Merchants

Bloomingdale’s Merchants drive the business by curating a distinguished product assortment, leveraging analytics to optimize sales, and ensuring we meet customer demand both in stores and online. Merchants strategize across channels, navigate the competitive landscape and understand the importance of innovation. Omni Merchants focus on building strong vendor relationships resulting in a unique and exclusive merchandise assortment. Bloomingdales’s Merchants maximize sales and gross margin for each product category by identifying, procuring, assorting and allocating the products that their customer demands.

Omni Buyer

Omni Planner

Digital Merchant

The Omni Buyer is responsible for the sales and profitability for their category of business through strategy creation and execution. The Omni Buyer selects and curates merchandise that creates a distinctive, powerful image and demand for Bloomingdale’s that speaks to our customer both in stores and online. The Omni Buyer is also responsible to lead, engage and develop junior merchants.

Omni Planner is responsible to drive the business by leveraging analytics to optimize sales, gross margin and turnover for both the stores and online business. Omni Planners are directly responsible for developing and maximizing localization strategies to capture business opportunities by demographics, climate, and other unique market characteristics. The Omni Planner is also responsible to lead, engage and develop junior merchants.

Digital Merchants influence the online assortment and are responsible for driving site merchandising and marketing strategies to maximize online demand. The Digital Merchants work closely with their Omni-Buyer counterpart to drive omnichannel revenue growth through the management of digital investment.

Omni Buyer
Merchant Executive Development Program

The Merchant Executive Development Program provides big-picture exposure to Bloomingdale's business model. Through a robust mix of in-class training with on the job application, the Merchant Executive Development Program will provide you with the technical and business skills required for merchant roles within our Omni Enterprise. The Merchant Executive Development Program will prepare you for your first merchant role as a buying coordinator/marketing liaison.

Omni Junior Merchant

This entry level role of the career path is responsible for ensuring accurate representation and assortment of product in stores, online and in advertising through the management of purchase orders and samples. The Omni Junior Merchant must forge strong vendor relationships and will directly interact and negotiate with our vendors to acquire samples. The role requires frequent communication with buying, marketing, creative, MIO and site merchandising teams and is a development position for an assistant role in either buying or planning. This role provides significant exposure and development in preparation for the Omni Assistant role.

Omni Assistant

Supports the merchant team to drive sales, margin, turn and growth through collaboration on the creation and evaluation of the merchandise plan. Analyze sales and stock performance, including tracking and analyzing sales and stock by location to maximize trends and recommend strategies. This level helps to train and coach the buying coordinator and marketing liaison role. This is a developmental role that prepares you for the next step in the career path as an analyst or business manager.

Analyst/Business Manager

A rotation as an analyst can take you outside of the merchandising pyramid and into the Bloomingdale’s organization at large. Designed to provide executives with a holistic understanding of the retail business analytical roles exist within (but are not limited to) marketing, customer insights, loss prevention, and finance. The Business Manager is responsible to execute big picture strategies for a specific division of the merchant pyramid. The Business Manager works closely with senior leadership to identify market trends, and guide insights and analytics to merchants on strategies to drive opportunities and minimize risks by vendors. Either role at this step in the career path is a developmental position towards Omni Senior Assistant.

Omni Senior Assistant

This role is responsible for managing part of the Omni Merchants’ total business throughout the season, Senior Assistants are directly responsible for the sales and profitability of their assigned area. Collaborating with their team the Omni Senior Assistant role is responsible for using analytics to make customer centric business driving decisions to curate an distinct product assortment, achieve sales, margin and turn for the omni-enterprise. This level also works closely with the Omni- Merchant to manage and develop the Omni Assistant. This is a developmental role that prepares you for an Omni Merchant role.

Omni Buyer/Planner

Buyers/Planners are responsible for the sales and profitability of a total category of business through strategy development and execution, as well as leading and developing their team of junior merchants.

Digital Merchant

Responsible for managing the digital investment for the total business, the Digital Merchant acts as the strategic business partner for merchants supporting the mission to drive sales, margin, turn and sales growth.

Omni Planner

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree with a solid academic record (GPA 3.2 or higher), all majors welcomed
  • Ability to demonstrate strong analytical skills
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal and time management skills
  • Organized approach to prioritizing projects and ability to multi-task
  • Strong business acumen and value on professional business ethics
  • Ability to succeed in a team environment
  • Proficiency in MS Word and MS Excel
